The Pine Grove Cemetery
Middlefield, MA
This 4 acre cemetery on
Clark Wright road saw the first burial in late September of 1911 as Richard
Sweeney buried his infant daughter. Since that time 250 internments have taken
place. This is now the town’s only open cemetery as the older Main Cemetery on
Bell Road is full and the ownership records are lost.
The following links are to
records that have been recently digitized. I have also made an initial attempt
at consolidating this information into a single spread sheet and I have also
started a summary of the owners and usage of all the plots. An adjacent 5 acre lot has been recently
gifted to the town for future expansion of this cemetery.
All the pre 1989 town
cemetery records - with the exception of the 1950 era Pine Grove map - were
apparently destroyed by vandals. The present manual records are kept on three
maps and in a bound journal. An additional 1994 index, 26 plot deeds, and a
collection of burial-transfer permits have been electronically collected for
archiving. I have photographed many of the heads stones and are adding those
pictures to the on-line “Find-a-Grave” data base.
